The C Squared Music takeover, while posted a bit late by the editor, is wrapping up with co-founder Curtis Dewar. Hailing from Ontario, Canada, Curtis tells us about his goals with this revamped public relations endeavor:
Tell our readers all about yourself! Where are you from and when did you get started?
My name is Curtis Dewar and I co-run C Squared with Corinne Westbrook. Previously I operated Dewar PR for about 10 years. We rebranded as C Squared this summer and so far things are going great! I've worked with a lot of different labels and artists over the years as a publicist and I also co-host the C Squared podcast with Cori.
What are your goals?
Basically my goals are to help my clients succeed and do well, which as a result will help the company do well. All of us feel that if we do a great job with our clients, we will also do well. Most people look for just how much income they're gonna be making and don't give a shit about the bands. With C Squared we really want to artists to succeed and we do everything we can to make that happen through our services!
Do you have a day job? If so, what is it?
This is my "day" job. In actual fact this is like 3 full time jobs. I start at about 7:30am and basically go (with a few breaks) till around 10:30 or 11pm at night every day/7 days a week.
How do you balance your work and personal life with C Squared?
If I'm being honest, I don't. I'm pretty much totally focused on C Squared at the moment. I had built Dewar PR up to a point where I was able to work only a few hours on weekends and not *too* late on weekdays, but since C Squared is a new entity, I'm basically going full blast until we're established. We've so far made a TON of progress and exceeded my expectations in the short time we've been around, so hopefully I won't be doing this schedule forever!
What do you consider to be the best investment you've made, career wise?
I've made a few, but honestly any time I get a good book or an audio program that teaches me something useful, it's always an amazing investment. There's so many good books out there!
What kind of merch do you purchase most often as a music listener?
Shirts! I don't buy a ton of shirts, but when I do buy merch, I definitely buy shirts!
Which online music or social media platforms are most helpful to you?
As a general rule I'd say it's Twitter, but Instagram can be quite valuable too. With Twitter you can get a TON of interaction, but doing live streams on Instagram can lead to a lot of great things as well.
What does "making it" in the music industry mean to you?
This is a bit tough for me as I know there's always more that can be done and more goals that can be achieved. For right now I'm totally focused on getting everyone else in C Squared up to full time ASAP and making sure that our clients get fantastic results each and every time. If I can attain that goal this year, I'll consider we've made the first step, but like I said, there's a LOT more to be done still.
