Hailing from Calgary, Ravenous E.H. -- AKA Ravenous Eternal Hunger, AKA just "Ravenous" -- combines elements of speed, thrash, power, doom, black, and progressive metal into one very epic package. Their most recent release, Hubris, came out in October 2021 to rave reviews. As Metal Temple put it, "Not only is this a fantastic Power Metal album, but a thoroughly outstanding metal album, period."
So what do these guys have to say about the financial side of running a band? Read on...
Tell our readers all about your band! Where are you from and when did you get started? What is your music like?
We are Ravenous E.H. – we’re a Canadian Symphonic Speed Metal band that started up in 2016, and our music takes the best elements of anthemic European Power Metal with the aggression of Extreme Metal blended in. It’s Power Metal for people who hate Power Metal!
What are your goals for your band?
Our end-goal is to tour international festivals and land at least one food-related sponsorship!
What do you do for a living?
Each member of our band has a different job!
Jake Wright is a Geologist.
Skyler Mills is a Welder.
Chris Valax is a Mason.
Dave Crnkovic is a General Contractor.
R. A. Voltaire is a filthy full-time Musician and Producer!
How do you balance your work and personal life with the band?
The band-side of life is both a personal artistic endeavour as well as a job that requires focus, determination, and diligence. It’s important to pull from both the professional and personal sides of your life to properly achieve musical success and balance.
What do you consider to be the best investment you've made, music-wise?
Home-recording equipment and the time investment of learning how to up your recording game!
What's the worst or least helpful thing you've ever spent money on as a musician/band?
We have a fortunate track record of only making good investments, but the worst possible thing you could spend money on is buying on to a tour or festival (something we have never done and will never do).
What kind of merch sells the best for your band? And what do you purchase most often as a music listener?
The merch that sells best for us is not worn on your torso: booty shorts, chopsticks, patches, coffee beans, beer - yes, we have our own beer! As music listeners, we buy merch that is unique (not just a black t-shirt) and we support our peers by buying their music in all formats.
Can you share some tour budgeting tips?
Make friends in every city you play so you have somewhere to sleep and poop.
There is no shame in fast-food restaurant bathroom showers.
Planning grocery stops will always be more economical and healthier than scarfing down fast food.
Which online music or social media platforms are most helpful to your band?
Bandcamp because the money for sales goes directly to us.
Discord for the online community and discussion.
Facebook for having a monopoly on the social media empire! That being said, nothing beats old-fashioned networking – meeting and connecting with your fans!
What does "making it" mean to you, and what do you think a band needs to make it in 2022?
“Making it” is seeing our name alongside the bands that have influenced us growing up. From a financial standpoint, making back the investments that we put into our music is a good start! That or a significant food-related sponsorship…
